What Black Maternal Health Week Means.

American birth workers have advocated and created a Black Maternal Health week because Black Mothers are dying and being disrespected at embarrassing rates in the United States.

As America’s little sibling, the same is true here—we just don’t have the preferred proof yet.

With all the conversations around Black death in the news, my inner avoidant wanted to spin this week into something positive that we could celebrate.

“Let’s celebrate the gains for Black maternal health!” or “Let’s celebrate Black mothers!”

But nah; There’s nothing here to celebrate. Especially here in Canada, where we’re still being gaslit.

I will however celebrate the joining of forces between Lisa Price of Carrol’s Daughter and my own imaginary mentor and guide to the Doula industry Latham Thomas of Mama Glow.

In their collaboration, they’ve come to bring awareness to the violence Black women are experiencing in medical industrial complexes, and addressing solutions to the struggle.

For this, I’m thankful and as an organization we’re encouraged.

This story-telling and information sharing is critical in getting the word out about these horrific realities.

Very much looking forward to the continued development of this campaign.
